City of Cerritos

city_government_-_cerritos_1.jpgThe City of Cerritos was incorporated upon a vote of its residents in April of 1956 and administered under the Council/Manager form of government, which was established in the Charter of the City in 1958. The five-member City Council, elected at large to staggered, four-year terms, serves as the City's chief policy-making body. Council Members may serve only two consecutive terms. The Mayor, selected by the Council, is its presiding officer and serves a one-year term. In the Mayor's absence the Mayor Pro Tem assumes his or her responsibilities.

A City Manager, appointed by the City Council, advises the City Council on matters of concern to the City and directs the day-to-day operations of the City's main departments: Administrative Services, Community and Safety Services, Community Development, Public Works, and the Theater Department. Two other positions are appointed by the City Council: the City Attorney and the City Clerk/Treasurer.

Advisory Boards, made up of individuals appointed by the City Council, provide guidance in determining how to meet the City's needs and include the following: Economic Development Commission, Fine Arts and Historical Commission, Parks and Recreation Commission, Planning Commission, Property Preservation Commission, Community Safety Committee, and the Let Freedom Ring Committee.

The City Council holds public meetings in the Council Chambers at the City Hall on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month. The public is encouraged to attend Council and Commission meetings, or tune their television to Cerritos TV3 to watch local government at work. Meetings can also be viewed through an archive available on the City's website at www.ci.cerritos.ca.us.

City of Hawaiian Gardens

hg_city_hall.jpgThe City of Hawaiian Gardens was formally incorporated as a city on April 9, 1964. The City of Hawaiian Gardens is a General Law City (not a Charter city) and governs itself as a Council-City Administrator form of government. The City Council Members must be residents of the City of Hawaiian Gardens and registered voters. City elections are considered non-partisan. The City Council is elected by the constituents and then the City Council hires the City Administrator. The City Council establishes policies and the City Administrator, assisted by the Department Heads, implements said policies to provide quality service to the public and the community.

The City Council consists of five members who are elected at-large to a four-year term of office. Elections are held in November of odd-numbered years and either two or three members are elected. The most recent City Election was held on November 6, 2007 where 2 Council seats were up for election.

Every November the legislative body re-organizes and selects a Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem from among themselves to serve for approximately one year. The Mayor serves as the presiding officer of the City Council and conducts all its meetings. In the absence of the Mayor, the Mayor Pro Tem becomes the presiding officer.

The City Council meets on a regular basis every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month at 6:00 p.m. in the City of Hawaiian Gardens City Council Chambers, 21815 Pioneer Blvd. The public is encouraged to attend Council and Commission meetings.
